The Newry Top and Dress is a peplum top or skirt that has an option for a peter pan collar which you can pair with either a button-front or tie-front bodice. The sleeves have a soft elastic finish cuff (comfie and easy to customise to your bicep size), and the dress view has generous pockets that we step you through anchoring after you’ve attached the skirt (so your massive phone won’t distort the shape of your cute dress). Also, it’s very cute.
Size and fabric
I sewed a straight Size E and used the 4+ cup-size option for the bodice front. Based on my measurements, I technically am a Size E through the top, an F by the waist and a Size G by the hips. I didn’t want to faff around with that though, and I knew that the volume of the sleeves and the skirt would keep me safe from harm.
I had 8m of this 110cm wide seersucker, and I used about 5 (I wasn’t trying to be very thrifty, I considered using scrap fabric for the pockets and facings but basically couldn’t be bothered).
I love all textured fabrics, but I particularly love seersucker and I was both excited and scared about sewing this fabric up into the Newry dress. Excited because I knew the fabric would highlight the shape of the dress, bring a beautiful texture, and also make those gathers SING! Scared because I was a bit unsure about how to treat seersucker during the sewing process to avoid having it become an absolute menace like double gauze does.
Stressed about how to treat the seersucker, I settled for ironing it before cutting, pressing the seams during the sewing process, and then washing and putting it through the dryer to re-puff it for photos. After that, I pressed the ties on the front and the hem, but let everything else stay crinkled and delicious.
I’m very pleased.
